A Gentle Note to Readers

Before you continue, I want to share that some of these posts include psychoeducation, poetry and visual imagery that touch on emotional trauma, family conflict, and difficult personal experiences. Some of the language and graphic elements may feel intense or triggering for some readers.

Please take care of yourself as you move through this piece. Feel free to pause, step away, or return when you’re ready. Your well-being always comes first.

New to Therapy? Here’s What You Can Expect

Starting therapy can feel like standing at the edge of something unfamiliar. You might be curious. You might be nervous. You might even be wondering if you’ll say the “right” things.

If you’re considering therapy for the first time, here’s a gentle walkthrough of what the process often looks like, and what you can expect when you begin.

Before Therapy: A Free Consultation (aka the Vibe Check)

Before committing to sessions, you’re invited to a free 15-minute consultation.

Think of this as a no-pressure conversation where we simply get a feel for each other.

This time is for:

  • Asking questions about therapy

  • Sharing what’s bringing you in

  • Learning how I work

  • Noticing whether you feel comfortable and understood

Therapy works best when the connection feels right. This step helps you decide if we’re a good fit because your comfort matters.

Your First Session: Setting the Foundation

The first session is not about diving into everything at once. It’s about creating a safe and respectful starting point.

Here’s what typically happens:

Informed Consent

We review important details about confidentiality, privacy, and what therapy involves. You deserve to know how your information is protected and what to expect from the process.

Building Trust

Therapy is a relationship. We move at your pace, and you decide what feels okay to share. There is no pressure to disclose anything before you’re ready.

A Brief Conversation About Your Story

You may share what led you to seek support right now. Some people come with clear goals; others just know something doesn’t feel right. Both are welcome.

Collaborative Goal-Setting

Together, we identify what you hope to gain from therapy, whether that’s relief, clarity, coping tools, healing, or growth.

During Sessions: What We Actually Do

Therapy is not just talking about your week (although that’s welcome too).

In sessions, we may:

Work Toward Goals

You don’t have to have everything figured out before you start.

Together, we clarify what matters to you.

That might be:

  • Reducing anxiety

  • Improving relationships

  • Setting boundaries

  • Processing trauma

  • Building confidence

  • Navigating identity

We move at your pace. Always.

Psychoeducation

Sometimes healing begins with understanding.

We might talk about:

  • How your nervous system responds to stress

  • Attachment patterns

  • Burnout

  • Trauma responses

  • The impact of minority stress

  • Emotional regulation

There’s power in learning that your reactions make sense.

Skill Building

Therapy isn’t just insight; it’s tools.

You might learn:

  • Grounding techniques

  • Communication strategies

  • Boundary setting

  • Self-compassion practices

  • Emotional regulation skills

These are practical supports you can carry into daily life.

Exploration

Some sessions are about curiosity.

Who are you outside of survival mode? What patterns keep showing up?

What do you actually want?

Therapy gives you room to explore without judgment.

In Between Sessions: Where Growth Continues

The work doesn’t stop when the session ends, but it also doesn’t have to feel heavy.

In between sessions, growth often looks like:

  • Practicing self-care

  • Reflecting on conversations

  • Trying out new skills

  • Occasional “homework” (if it feels helpful)

  • Connecting more intentionally with loved ones

Sometimes the biggest shifts happen quietly in how you respond to a stressful email, how you speak to yourself after a mistake, or how you pause instead of reacting.

Therapy is not about perfection. It’s about practice.

Not Too Scary, I Promise

If therapy feels intimidating, you’re not alone.

Here are a few truths:

  • It’s okay to “shop around” and find a therapist that vibes with you.

  • You deserve someone who feels safe and aligned.

  • You’re allowed to ask questions before committing.

  • Therapy isn’t as overwhelming as your anxiety might tell you it is.

You don’t have to spill your entire life story in the first session.

You don’t have to cry (unless you want to). You don’t have to be in crisis to start.

You just have to show up.

A Gentle Reminder

You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. You don’t need perfect words. You don’t need a crisis to deserve support.

You only need a willingness to show up as you are.

At All Season Wellness, we honour wellness through every season: the overwhelmed season, the reflective season, the growth season, and the healing season.

And if you’re wondering whether it’s time to start, maybe this is your gentle nudge.

You don’t have to do this alone.
